A Perth-based motor trimming company has launched a very own range of protective machine covers to the Queensland mining sector which are saving a number of the state's major businesses a large amount in replacement parts and preventative maintenance fees.
Modern motor trimmers has spent over five years researching and developing a range of ram covers for truck and excavators. The 'ripstop' PVC sleeves hinder wear and tear, maybe tripling the life expectancy of ram seals and chroming, and creating significant cost savings.
The covers, which retail for under $1,000, have also been designed for coal shoots, rock crushers and dust extractors, and are proving popular along with procurement professionals and mine planners who have quickly acquired on the savings and efficiencies they offer.
MMT managing director Garry Spouge said the covers give protection against stones, dust and salt pitting the machinery's rods, which can cause to the tearing of ram seals. They have been developed to enable simple self-installation by mechanics.
"Fitting new ram seals can take several mechanics up to half a day, and have obvious security implications, particularly where cranes or cherry pickers are needed," he said.
"It's certainly a more expensive exercise in terms of manpower and also with machinery being down or out of use for a few hours.
"That's why we've created our ram covers to be easily installed, they leak on and are secured either side by a patented clamp; the entire process takes about 45 minutes and can boost the life of the rod and seals by a couple of times.
"Given that an excavator ram may cost in excess of $50,000, the rate savings are pretty impressive, which is why the demand for our covers is quickly increasing."
One of the first businesses to fit the protective covers to its total truck fleet was Western-Australia based FMG, at its mine in far north WA.
Rio Tinto in Queensland and has also just placed a bulk order for the sleeves, which MMT is producing in a range of safety colors, which includes yellow and orange.
"We're finding that the more progressive companies are seeing the massive cost benefits, and our orders have increased by 20 per cent since first release into the Queensland market only 6 months ago," Mr Spouge added.
"We're also working with a number of the bigger miners to custom design protective sleeves for other plant and machinery, and this bespoke, tailor-made service is an area which we are going to be looking to increase into in the near future."
The research and development work performed by MMT on the protective ram covers is an addition to the company's core market, which is focused on the furnish, installation and servicing of premium suspension seats and seating products to the Australian mining, design, engineering, building and transport sectors.
The company is Western Australia's only authorized supplier and repairer for German maker ISRI, which is broadly well known as the manufacturer of the world's most advanced driver and passenger seating products.
